American Champion Two-Year-Old Male Horse (2015)

Nyquist (foaled March 10, 2013[2]) is a two-year-old champion Thoroughbred, winner of the 2015 Breeders' Cup Juvenile as well as the 2015 Eclipse Award for Champion Two-Year Old.

He is named for the Swedish ice hockey player Gustav Nyquist, who plays for the Detroit Red Wings, and is currently owned and trained by the same team who won the 2012 Kentucky Derby with I'll Have Another, Doug O'Neill and J. Paul Reddam.

Nyquist went through the sales ring three times, first as a weanling at Keeneland November, selling for $180,000. Next he sold as a yearling at Keeneland September for $230,000. At two, he sold at the Fasig-Tipton March sale to Dennis O'Neill for $400,000.[3] Days after he won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, Darley America purchased his breeding rights and upon retirement Nyquist will stand at Jonabell Farm in Lexington, Kentucky.[4]

Two-year-old season

Nyquist began his two-year-old season in a maiden special at Santa Anita, which he won. He next ran in the Best Pal Stakes and the Del Mar Futurity, winning again. In both cases, the colt Swipe ran second. Next was the FrontRunner Stakes, where Nyquist again defeated Swipe, this time by three-quarters of a length.[3]

He then flew to Lexington, Kentucky, and won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, again defeating Swipe, who was second.[5][6]

At the Eclipse Awards for 2015, Nyquist was named American Champion Two-Year-Old Male Horse, taking 255 of the 261 votes.[7]

Three-year-old season

In 2016, Nyquist began the season with a win at the San Vicente Stakes. A Fasig-Tipton $1,000,000 bonus was available if he won the Florida Derby, as he went through the Fasig-Tipton ring at two. [8] For that reason, rather than running in the Santa Anita Derby to earn Kentucky Derby points, the colt ran in the Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park. Nyquist won the Florida Derby by three-and-a-quarter lengths, defeating rival Mohaymen, who finished fourth.[9]
