Ohel (social services)

Ohel (pronounced Oh'-hel) is a large Jewish social service agency, primarily located in New York City, that provides counseling, crisis intervention, and other services to children and families who are going through or suffering from abuse, domestic violence, marital problems, mental health issues,[1] and/or neglect.[2] As of 2008, Ohel employs over 1200 employees including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, case managers, and mental health workers. The agency consists of divisions used to support individuals with mental illness, developmental disabilities, and other psychiatric and psychological difficulties. Ohel also maintains numerous residences for foster care children.

The organization,[3] whose full name is Ohel Children's Home and Family Services, is larger than others with similar missions, such as Mekimi [4] and Harmoney Services.[5]

Ohel was ranked No. 1 in 2007 in New York State by the Office of Children and Family Services for care delivered in its Foster Care programs.[6]
