Oak Grove, Mississippi
Oak Grove, Mississippi is a large neighborhood west of Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Oak Grove is considered distinct from Hattiesburg and West Hattiesburg which are an incorporated city and a CDP respectively. The borders of Oak Grove are generally known as Jackson/Hegwood road on the east side, Richburg and McMahon Roads on the south side, the Lamar/Forest County line on the north side, and Black Creek on the west.
There have been moves to incorporate Oak Grove as a city to keep out criminals and corruption from Hattiesburg, which as of Early 2016 is pursuing annexation of a large majority of Oak Grove's commercial corridor.
Major websites (such as maps.google.com and wikipedia.com) refer to all of Oak Grove as 'West Hattiesburg' which offends locals as a rarely used and negatively connotated term.
Oak Grove has an estimated population of about 13,000.
The area is served by the Oak Grove School System.
Incorporation
There have been moves to incorporate Oak Grove as a city to keep out criminals and corruption from Hattiesburg, which as of early 2016 is pursuing annexation of a large majority of Oak Grove's commercial corridor. Another big reason residents support incorporation is a large immigration of students from the Hattiesburg public school system into (sometimes illegally) into the Oak Grove School System, causing overpopulation. In 2015, many Oak Grove residents joined a movement to make the western side of Oak Grove the city of "Bellevue" Mississippi. "Bellevue", however, is unlikely to be incorporated as it (to little approval) excludes major population centers of OG (like Lake Serene) and would raise taxes too high for some.
