The Odessa Museum of Regional History is a historical museum in Odessa, Ukraine. The exposition of the museum is dedicated to the regional history of Odessa and its region.
The museum building
The museum is located in the centre of the city, in the palatial mansion at ul. Havana, 4, built in 1876 by the famous Odessa architect Felix Gonsiorovskiy.
The building was constructed for one of the major representatives of industrial and commercial elite of the time – Alexander Yakovlevich Novikov, the grandson of the famous Odessa merchant first guild Ilya Novikov, owner, founded in 1806, the cable factory.
The architecture of the two-storey mansion, as in previous works of Felix Gonsiorovskiy prevails spirit stylization based on the use of forms of the late Renaissance, with a variation of patterns and motifs drawn from the architectural heritage of Italy.
Until 1899, the mansion was known in Odessa as the "House of Novikov," and in the early twentieth century it was acquired by the city authorities. In 1907 the house was leased to Odessa commercial collection. After October 1917 here often changed owners. In the staterooms housed various clubs, departmental libraries, regional party courses.
