The Olympic Tennis Center (Portuguese: Centro Olímpico de Tênis) is a tennis venue located in the Barra Olympic Park in Barra da Tijuca in the west zone of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The center will host tennis events of the 2016 Summer Olympics, and the wheelchair tennis events of the 2016 Summer Paralympics. The center was built on the site of the former Nelson Piquet International Autodrome.
The center consists of a tennis stadium and 15 ancillary courts.[1] The surface will be fast hard courts similar to the other North American tournaments that will be held in August.[2][3]
Construction started in 2013 and is near completion as of February 2016.
In December 2015, the center court was named after Maria Esther Bueno a retired Brazilian tennis player, who became the first woman ever to win all four Grand Slam double titles in one year.[4]
