Onia (o-nee-ah; the Hebrew word for “ship”) is a New-York based clothing company that focuses on creating men’s swimwear and ready to wear.[1] The company was founded in 2009 by Carl Cunow and Nathan Romano with the goal of offering a more simple yet elegant style of men’s swimwear than “surf-style” board shorts.
History
Carl Cunow began his career in fashion as a product developer for Steven Alan.[2] In 2009, Carl left Steven Alan to start his own brand, Onia. Onia made its debut in retail stores such as Barneys New York and Steven Alan, and has since expanded to be in over 200 locations nationwide. In spring 2012, Onia expanded its product line to include boys swimwear.
Onia has been featured in The New York Times,[3] The Wall Street Journal,[4] and men’s fashion publications such as GQ and Detail. Men’s swimtrunks retail from $120 to $195. Boys swimtrunks retail from $65 to $95.
In 2013, Onia expanded its collection to include men’s casual wear.[5]
In Summer 2015, Onia launched women's swim and ready to wear.[6]
In December 2015, Onia launched on Mr. Porter.[7]
Collaborations
Onia has an ongoing collaboration with Liberty Art Fabrics, who supplies quality fabrics for much of Onia’s swimwear. Onia has also collaborated with Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company and many other luxury destination resorts to create towels exclusively for resort guests.
