Orathanad town also known as Muthambapuram, is one of the eight talukas of the Thanjavur district in the Indian state of Tamil nadu.its town available for all facilities . orathanadu is fourth major city of thanjavur district

History

From 1674 until 1820 the city was part of the Maratha Empire. According to legend, Queen Muthambaal retrieved treasure from a pond by sacrificing her life from which the king made more than 40 "Anna Sathira" in Orathanadu taluk.

Geography and climate

Orathanadu has an average elevation of 2 m (6.6 ft) and lies on the south bank of the Kaveri River, 223 miles (359 km) south of Chennai.

On November 27, 2008 Orathanadu broke the 65-year-old record for the highest rainfall in 24 hours in Tamil Nadu,[1] registering 660 millimetres (26 in) and exceeding the 570 millimetres (22 in) registered by Cuddalore on May 18, 1943. However, Orathanadu lost the rainfall record to Kethi in the Nilgiris district after the town recorded 82 centimetres (32 in) of rain in 24 hours during early November, 2009. .[2]

There is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva in Orathanad. Those who are not able to visit Kasi in North India can have a Dharsan of Kasi Viswanathar and Kasi Visalakshi Amman at Orathanad town itself, since the main deities in this temple are Kasi Visalakshi amman and Kasi Viswanathar.

Orathanad town has a large livestock farm as does Eachankottai Village. Together the two cover more than 100 acres (0.40 km2) of land and are the modelled on the farm in Hosur. Research and development is in progress at Eachankottai by-breed livestock farm.

A survey training institute in Orathanad Town is the only one in the state that trains both Revenue Officials and Survey Officials.

Here lord premmapureeswara and lord praisoodi amman sannathi, lord pillaiyar, lord murugan and navagraga sannathi also inside the temple so it is called big temple. And remainig temples are lord varadhra perumaal, lord mariyamman, lord pidaariyamman, lord mazhavaiyyan, lord idunpan swami and also famous temple of ayynar poularly known as Lord Thirunthaandi Ayyan in this village.

There is an old style two-tier river bridge in VETTIKKADU Village where the C.M.B. Canal runs under the first-tier and the Kattaru River under the second tier.

Orathanad has a Maratha Chattram named after Muktambal, one of the queens of Serfoji II. This chariot shaped building displays religious sculptures in stucco and wood. Manora, an eight-storied miniature fortress, is near Orathanadu while the Mannargudi Vishnu Temple and Shri Mannargudi Teerth at Mannargudi are easily accessible from Thanjavur via Orathanad, which is a 30 kilometres (19 mi) drive away. The town of Kulamangalam nearest to Neyvasal is 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) north of Orathanad. And next to the south of Kulamangalam there is Okkanadu Melaiyur village, which has a lake named Vellayangiri.

Parithiyappar temple: It is situated in 3 km East from Melaulur. Panguni Uthiram and Surya pooja are famous.
