The Orfeo Music Festival and Summer Academy is an international summer music festival in the Italian resort town of Vipiteno (or Sterzing) surrounded by the Alps. Founded in 2002 by Russian expatriate and music scholar Larisa Jackson, Orfeo has a roster of artists including vocalists Evgeny Akhmedov, Maria Bayankina, Andrei Bondarenko,[1] Larissa Gergieva, Yulia Matochkina, Yulia Mazurova, Kristina Mkhytarian, Sergei Romanovsky, Ilya Selivanov, Irina Shishkova, Dmitry Vdovin, Antonina Vesenina, pianists Stanislav Ioudenitch, Vladimir Krainev, Alexei Lubimov, Vitaly Samoshko, Gilles Vonsattel, violinists Mikhail Gantvarg, Almita Vamos, Pavel Vernikov, Zakhar Bron, violists Ilan Schneider, Roland Vamos, and cellists Natalia Gutman, Ko Iwasaki, Misha Maisky.
Academy
Orfeo Summer Academy nurtures young musical talent under the auspices of the Orfeo Festival, where distinguished musicians mentor the young in individual instruction, chamber music coachings, master classes, and variety of courses. Some notable alumni include violinists Greta Salome, Simone Parker,[2] Daniel Andai, Randall Goosby, and pianist Kevin Loucks. A wide range of educational programs includes chamber music, private instruction, voice institute, conducting, collaborative piano, secondary piano, orchestra auditions, pedagogy courses, music history and theory, body mapping, language courses, and yoga.
Facilities
Orfeo Festival takes place in several venues in Vipiteno including historical buildings such as 17th-century Chiesa di St. Margarheta, 14th-century Chiesa di Santo Spirito, 13th-century Vipiteno Scuola Musica, modern Teatro Municipale and Piazza Citta.
