Origin Broadband is a British ISP and network operator based in Doncaster and Sheffield, South Yorkshire that specialises in providing consumer and wholesale internet connectivity, including ADSL2+, FTTC, Leased Lines, and telecommunications services. Services such as colocation, website hosting and remote backup storage are also available from Origin’s secure datacentre. Origin Broadband currently operates the UK's 6th largest network.[1]
History
Origin Broadband was formed by two students in Doncaster to address the perceived failures in the local broadband market in terms of speed, customer service and quality of technical support.[2] The company began by reselling on the Digital Region fibre optic network, a largely publicly funded network. Origin Broadband soon became the largest ISP on the network.[3]
Origin began its award-nominated apprenticeship program in 2012, as well as beginning its Datacentre operations,[4] allowing them to provide services such as web hosting, colocation and remote storage backup.
The company started to plan its own network in 2014 upon the announcement that the Digital Region network would be closing, due to lack of funding in August 2014.[5] Origin now operates on its own network throughout South Yorkshire, and this currently stands as 6th largest in the UK.
From April 2015 Origin Broadband became one of the leading suppliers of the SuperConnected Cities connection vouchers, an initiative ran by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. Notably, Origin supplied the first connection voucher in South Yorkshire,[6] and remained the leading regional supplier throughout the project.[7]
Following the cessation of the Superconnected Cities initiative, Origin Broadband set aside a fund of £10m and launched a voucher programme of their own.[8] The Origin Broadband Connection Vouchers gave eligible businesses a fully funded installation for a leased line or similar premium connection.
Additional investment was secured in August 2015 from Finance Yorkshire.[9]
In early 2016 Origin Broadband reformatted the way that they marketed their products, consolidating business-class connectivity into a sub-brand, Origin Broadband Business.[10] They also launched new propositions designed for schools, colleges and universities, Origin Broadband Education,[11] and a partner programme, Origin Broadband Wholesale.
