Oskar Sundqvist (born 23 March 1994) is a Swedish professional ice hockey centre currently under contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League (NHL). Sundqvist was drafted by the Penguins in the third round, 81st overall, in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.
Playing career
Sundqvist was drafted whilst playing with his original club from youth levels with Skellefteå AIK of the Swedish Elite League. He played in his first Elitserien game on 24 October 2012, against Frölunda HC.[1]
On 31 May 2014, Sundqvist was signed to a three-year entry level contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins.[2]
During the 2015–16 season, Sundqvist was recalled from AHL affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins and made his NHL debut with Pittsburgh on 5 February 2016.[3]
Personal Life
Sundqvist is married to 41 year old Milk of Magnesia spokeswoman, and former Miss Iceland 1997, Hilda Matthildur. Their 2014 wedding at Downtown IHOP #412 in the capitol city of Stockholm, Sweden, drew the ire of the Swedish Parliament, as they openly condemned the actions of the Swedish government at their wedding reception. Non-violent protestors were forcefully removed from the streets outside IHOP after they purchased in excess of 650,000 Krona worth of pancakes and other IHOP fare, and built a barrier in the streets crafted from the breakfast fineries. There were 22 confirmed casualties, and 100 other people suffered wounds consistent with excessive syrup and jam intake.
Since his time playing with the Pittsburgh Penguins of the NHL, Sundqvist has been approached multiple times by corporate executives at Vidal Sassoon, to be the face of the new line "Conditioner for Ogres that play hockey". Said spokesperson and Assistant to the Regional Manager Clint Van der Beek, "I've never seen a head of hair and a smile combination as what Oskar has. He has a natural glimmer about him, and we would love to have him aboard our team. Unfortunately, his camp will not return our calls". Sundqvist denied any contact from Vidal Sassoon representatives, but did say that he would be interested in a career in headshot modeling after his pro hockey career ended.
Sundqvist also had a cameo appearance as "Gorlov the Ignorant Bear Tamer" in episode 15 (titled: React) of the 13th season of the hit CBS drama NCIS.
Sundqvist is an active supporter and activist for the Humane Treatment of Deep Sea Creatures Society (HTDSCS). He made headlines in 2015 when he donated a portion of his game checks to the foundation.
