Then, he became police officer. Otto Schumann joined the NSDAP in 1933[3] and the SS in 1939[4] with the rank of SS-Standartenführer und Oberst der Polizei.[2]

When World War II broke out, Schumann served in Stettin (Wehrkreis II), as Standartenführer. In May 1940, he was transferred to The Hague in the Netherlands and promoted SS-Oberführer.[2] On 30 January 1941, Otto Schumann was promoted SS-Brigadeführer und Generalmajor der Polizei. From December 1942 to September 1943, Otto Schumann served in Münster (Wehrkreis VI).[2] In August 1943, Otto Schumann was promoted to the rank of SS-Gruppenführer und Generalleutnant der Polizei. In February 1944, Schumann was sent to Vienna, where he stayed until October 1944. Then, he took command of the SS-Oberabschnitt West, in Düsseldorf.[2]
