Paani (English:Water) is an upcoming Indian science fiction film written and directed by Shekhar Kapur. The film would feature original musical score composed by A. R. Rahman . A futuristic Romeo & Juliet story set in Mumbai, the film has water scarcity as the backdrop. Sushant Singh Rajput plays the lead role[2] opposite Ayesha Kapur.[3] The film is speculated to feature an Indian and Western cast.

Plot

Thirty-five years into the future in a city with a population of 20 million people, a war has begun in the quest for water, known as the "Water Wars", between those that have water and those that do not, at a time when water has become a weapon of social and economic control.

Production

Initially, Hrithik Roshan was signed in to play the lead role. But later, Hrithik Roshan and the producers of 'Paani' reportedly decided to call it quits over a disagreement on profit sharing.[4] Sushant Singh Rajput is now the main lead in the much-delayed film.

While in A. R. Rahman's studio in 2012, Aditya Chopra expressed his desire to produce the film under his home banner Yash Raj Films, to which the Kapur agreed. But after four years in pre-production, Kapur revealed that they have parted ways due to creative differences.[5]
