Pacheco's disease

Pacheco's disease is an acute, contagious and often lethal disease in Psittacinae, a subfamily of parrots. Macaws, amazon parrots, monk parakeets and conures are often affected.

The disease is caused by a herpesvirus which is spread by direct contact and, in feces or as an aerosol, through food or water. Outbreaks can occur when stress causes clinically healthy birds who carry the virus to shed it and infect other birds.
