Palazzetto Bru Zane - Centre de musique romantique française

The Palazzetto Bru Zane – Centre de musique romantique française is a cultural institution, research centre and concert hall dedicated to the French musical heritage from the years 1780 to 1920.
The foundation is located in Venice and its core activities are the scientific research, the production of concerts and stage performances, the production and release of sound recordings and the support of educational projects.
History and architecture

The center is based in the Palazzetto Bru Zane, formerly Palazzetto Zane, a restored palace in the San Polo area of Venice on the canal Rio Marin.

Scientific research
The scientific research enables to rediscover forgotten or hitherto unpublished scores. The research mostly deals with the organisation of seminars, the digitisation and also the cataloguing of precious collections:
- The yearly organisation of symposia in collaboration with various partners: Centro Studi Opera Omnia Luigi Boccherini: Centro Studi Opera Omnia Luigi Boccherini, Bibliothèque nationale de France, Théâtre national de l'Opéra-Comique, Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris, Centre national de la recherche scientifique....
- The coordination of research projects in collaboration with musico¬logists, international institutions and descendants of 19th century composers.
- The cataloguing and digitisation of documentary collections and public and private archives connected with the French Romantic repertoire: the Villa Medici music collection, the staging manuals in the Bibliothèque Historique de la Ville de Paris, the Pleyel/Érard/Gaveau archives at the Cité de la Musique (Paris), private archives relating to the violinist Pierre Baillot, and so on.
- The organisation of about ten seminars per year in collaboration with various partners: Centro Studi Boccherini (Lucca), Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Opéra Comique, Paris Conservatoire (CNSMD), the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), etc.
- The provision of digital resources.
Concerts and stage performances

The Palazzetto Bru Zane produces concerts and stage performances which are presented in Venice (season of musical events and talks), in Paris (e.g. the Palazzetto Bru Zane Festival which takes place in June every year) and in other venues worldwide (French Institutes, Prinzregententheater in Munich, Centre for Fine Arts, Brussels).

Sound recordings
Since 2012 The Palazzetto has its own series of CD-Books in bilingual edition (English and French):
- The «Opéra français» series, dedicated to rare works.
- The «Portraits» series, whose areas of focus are forgotten or little known composers.
- The «Prix de Rome» series, which focuses on the cantatas of the Prix de Rome and the “envois” composed at the Villa Medici in the context of the Prix de Rome competition.
Publications
The Actes Sud/Palazzetto Bru Zane collection—co-authored books, musicological essays, conference proceedings or archive documents— presents key actors and witnesses of the artistic history from the 19th century, as well as of contemporary critics. The collection explores various aspects of the French Romantic repertoire and the musical life of this period, focusing on the careers of famous or neglected composers as well as on the history of concert, musical genres and performers.

Competitions and development
The Palazzetto Bru Zane is also actively involved in providing young musicians with an opportunity to get to know the realities of the music world today through educational projects and its work in partnership with a number of international competitions. Indeed, the foundation:
- organises master-classes for young professional musicians with the Jeune Orchestre Atlantique (an approach to perform on period instruments) at the Académie Ravel in Saint-Jean-de-Luz (performance of the chamber opera repertoire), and also in collaboration with the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel
- rewards the Palazzetto Bru Zane Prize for the performance of rare works of the French Romantic repertoire as part of the Lyon International Chamber Music Competition.
- develops initiatives for the young public such as the Romantici in erba programme, in collaboration with kindergartens and primary schools in Veneto, and a series of family concerts in Venice.
