Paolo Bolpagni (born 1979 in Brescia) is an Italian art historian, critic and curator.

Biography

Paolo Bolpagni has earned his reputation through a large scientific production and the organization of important exhibitions.[1] He teaches contemporary art history at the Università degli Studi eCampus. He has also taught at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (UCSC). He won the prestigious Sulmona Prize for Art History in 2013.[2]

Historic and artistic research

The Bolpagni production aims at the revalue and study of artists and important art movements, as the Avanti della Domenica, an early-20th-century weekly journal, run by Vittorio Piva, which has had its covers created by artists like Mario Sironi, Gino Severini, Umberto Boccioni; Mario Ballocco and the Gruppo Origine (together with Alberto Burri, Giuseppe Capogrossi and Ettore Colla); the innovative transmedia research of Luigi Veronesi; the Wagnerism phenomenon in visual art between late 19th and early 20th century; the visual and iconic component of the scores of the neo-avant-gardes. Thanks to his studies as a pianist and composer, Bolpagni has won a reputation as one of the major expert of the relation between music and visual art in the 19th and 20th century. He is also recognized for his research concerning abstract art, applied art in post-war Italy, and his studies concern also Paul Klee, Lucio Fontana, painting between the two World Wars, and the history of art criticism and architecture.

Collezione Paolo VI - arte contemporanea

Paolo Bolpagni is the responsible for the new mounting of the Collezione Paolo VI - arte contemporanea, a museum sets in Concesio (Northern Italy) opened with the visit of Pope Benedict XVI in 2009.[3] In 2012 he also organised the exhibition Immagine della luce. Artisti della contemporaneità internazionale per Villa Clerici, together with Francesca Pola, at the "Galleria d'Arte Sacra dei Contemporanei" in Milan-Niguarda, a location promoted by Pope Montini, when he was Archbishop in Milan.[4]

Art Criticism and new media

Bolpagni is also an active art critic. He has presented or organized exhibitions for contemporary artists such as Mirco Marchelli, Raul Gabriel, Gabriella Benedini, Kengiro Azuma, Umberto Mariani, Nelio Sonego, Filippo Minelli, Aliza Olmert, Giuliano Giuman, Nicola Evangelisti, Margherita Serra, Josh Hadar, and Günter Umberg. He has also overseen exhibitions and catalogues for a group of young artists (GAC - Giovane Arte Contemporanea). He dedicates himself to the popularization of art through new media: he created together with Silvia Cascio and Simone Agnetti the successful YouTube Channel "Regola d'arte",[5] in which Bolpagni presents contemporary art, artists, movements and trends in three-minute videos.[6]
