Papa's Got a Brand New Pigbag
"Papa's Got a Brand New Pigbag" is a 1981 dance instrumental performed by Pigbag. The instrumental was written by Pigbag, who produced it, along with, Dave Hunt and Dick O'Dell.[1] Initially, "Papa's Got a Brand new Pigbag" hit number #2 on the UK underground charts. In the US, the instrumental was released as an import on the Rough Trade label, where it made to number #56 on the dance chart.[2] A 1982 re-release of "Papa's Got a Brand New Pigbag" went to #3 in the UK.[3] Whilst the track is well known for its brass riff, the bassline of the track was also ranked by Stylus Magazine at number 40 in their 2005 list of the "Top 50 Basslines of All Time".[4]
The piece's title is a play on the James Brown song "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag".
Cover versions
- In 1995, Paul Oakenfold released the track "Reach Up (Papa's Got a Brand New Pigbag)" and was credited to Perfecto Allstarz. This version went to #6 in the UK.
- In 2001, Thunderpuss, had a number one dance hit in the US, when they recorded the track.[5]
Popular Media
- Used as the "goal celebration" music at Middlesbrough football club and Queens Park Rangers.
- Used as the "walk on" music for former 2-time PDC World Darts Champion Adrian Lewis.
- British gymnast Claudia Fragapane used a remix of the track as the music for her floor exercise during the 2015 season. She will also be using it at the 2016 Summer Olympics.[6]
