Patricia Petersen

Patricia May Petersen, is an Australian academic and former political candidate from Ipswich, Queensland.

Education

Petersen holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of New South Wales and was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Queensland in 2002.[1] Petersen previously was a lecturer at Central Queensland University.[2]

Electoral History

Petersen has unsuccessfully run for political office numerous times and has been referred to as a serial candidate.[3]

Petersen ran as an Independent for the federal seat of Warringah in 2004[4] and 2007[5] losing both times to Tony Abbott. Petersen would also contest the Mayoral election in Manly in 2008, losing to Jean Hay.[6]

Petersen ran as an Independent for the Queensland seat of Bundamba in the 2009 state election, losing to Jo-Ann Miller.[7]

Petersen contested the seat of Blair at the 2010 federal election as an Australians Greens candidate, losing to Shayne Neumann.[8]

Petersen, running once more as an Independent, contested the seat of Ipswich in the 2012 Queensland state election, losing to Ian Berry.[9]

In 2013 Petersen started her own political party, the Australian Independents, and ran as the lead Senate candidate for the state of Queensland in the 2013 Australian federal election. Petersen was unsuccessful in securing a seat after distributions were allotted.[10]

Following on from her unsuccessful bid to be elected to the Senate, Petersen ran as an Independent candidate for Mayor of Noosa in late 2013. Petersen was once again unsuccessful, losing to Noel Playford. [11]

Petersen once again contested the seat of Ipswich as an Independent at the 2015 Queensland state election. Petersen lost to Jennifer Howard.[12]

Petersen ran for Division 3 of Ipswich City Council in 2016, losing to Kerry Silver.[13]

The Australian Independents was deregistered in February 2016 as a result of not showing sufficient membership to remain as a registered political party.[14]

Personal life

Petersen has written two books and has also written and starred in two plays based on her time running against Tony Abbott in 2004 and 2007.[15] [16]

She is also a relationships counsellor, having worked for Brisbane radio station B105 FM and Sydney radio station 2UE and was a panellist on the Australian television show Beauty and the Beast.[17]

Petersen has a black belt in karate.[18]
