Paul Marie Félix Jacques René Arnaud de Foïard (9 September 1921 – 7 August 2005) was a French Army general who took part in World War II, First Indochina War and Algerian War.

Biography

At age 20, Paul entered into the French Resistance. Imprisoned, he managed to escape and joined the French Liberation Army. During the duration of the war, Paul served at the corps of the 501st Combat Tank Regiment.

Assigned as an aspirant of the 3rd battalion of the Marching Regiment of the Foreign Legion (R.M.L.E) on 1 April 1944, Paul participated then to the disembarking of Provence then to the offensive of the 1st Army, an offensive in which he was wounded. While leading his section (platoon), in Germany, he would receive the médaille militaire in 1945.

Assigned then to the 3rd Foreign Infantry Regiment 3^èmeREI, Paul partook in the Indochina campaigns where he was wounded for a second time. Made chevalier of the Legion of Honour in 1947, he volunteered to serve as section (platoon) commander in the Parachute Company of the 3rd Foreign Infantry Regiment Para Co.du 3^èmeREI in 1948.

In 1952, Paul was promoted to captain and took command of the 2nd combat company of the I/1st Foreign Regiment 1^etRE at Saïda, Algeria. Following his command, he was assigned to the moral service of the Foreign Legion as editor in chief of Képi blanc in Sidi Bel Abbès. In 1955 and while heading the 5th combat company of the 4th Foreign Regiment 4^èmeRE, Paul was cited at the orders of the armed forces. Following, Paul rejoined metropole in 1957 at the Communal Depot of the Foreign Regiments.

While attending a war school, Paul reintegrated the operations bureau of the 2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment 2^èmeREP from 1962 to 1963. He assumed command of the foreign parachute regiment in 1965 at Bou Sfer and ensured the transfer of the regiment to Calvi, Corsica in 1967.

Paul took command of the 11th Parachute Brigade from 1975 to 1977. He left active duty service on 10 September 1981 with the rank of a Corps general, after having commanded for 4 years the prestigious École de guerre in Paris.
