Pernem (pronounced [pɛːɽɳɛ̃ː]) is a city and a municipal council in North Goa district in the Indian state of Goa.
Geography
Pernem is located at 15°43′01″N 73°47′52″E / 15.71694°N 73.79778°E at an average elevation of 47 metres (154 ft).[1] Pernem is one of the twelve talukas of Goa. Pernem taluka consists of twenty village panchayats and one municipality (Pernem city). Pernem taluka is surrounded by Vengurla and Sawantwadi talukas of Sindhudurga to the north, Dodamarg taluka of Sindhudurga to the east, Bardez and Bicholim to the south and the Arabian sea to the west.
Economy
There is no major source of income in the taluka. The taluka market does not attract too many people from around the area. Most of the people depend on other regions for employment. Pernem consists of around 200 small enterprises. Thursday weekly market is exceptional, which is the second largest in North Goa.
Education
Viscount of Pernem High School, Shree Bhagwati High School and St Joseph High school are 3 high schools, 1 Govt Higher Secondary, 1 Govt college of arts and commerce and 1 ITI. For higher education in Science, Engineering and Medicine students have to go to other cities.
Demographics
As of the 2011 India census,[2] Pernem had a population of 75,747 with gender ratio of 959 females to 1000 males.However, the child ratio (0-6 years) is much lower i.e 911.The overall Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Pernem has an average literacy rate of 82.6%, higher than the national average of 74.04%: male literacy is 84% and female literacy is 75.1%. In Pernem, 9.1% of the population is under 6 years of age. The total urbanization level is 39.7 percent
Religious festivals
Pernem is famous for Dussehra. On the day of Kojarari Pournima a big feast is organised. People from Maharashtra, Goa and Karanataka visit Pernem . People visit temples like Adisthan Mangar, Bhagawati, Rawalnath, Sateri, Dwarpal, Mauli, Gautameshwar, Narayan, Mulvir, Maruti and Shri Nagnath. This is one of the biggest feasts of Goa.
Water Falls
There are two waterfalls in Pernem. one, in Mauli Temple area at Sarmale and another at Mulvir Temple area at Malpe.
Transport
Pernem is well connected by road and the Konkan railway. Pernem railway station is the first railway station in Goa for inbound trains from Mumbai. Mandovi Express, Konkan Kanya Express and Goa Sampark Kranti Express halt here. National Highway 17 passes through this area which connects it to Bombay and Mangalore.
