Penta-graphene is a proposed carbon allotrope composed entirely of carbon pentagons and resembling the Cairo pentagonal tiling.[1] Penta-graphene was proposed in 2014 on the basis of analyses and simulations.[1] Theoretical calculations showed that penta-graphene is dynamically and mechanically stable, and can withstand temperatures up to 1,000 K (730 °C; 1,340 °F).[1] Owing to its atomic configuration, penta-graphene has an unusually negative Poisson’s ratio and very high ideal strength believed to exceed that of a similar material, graphene.[1]
