Persatuan Sepak Bola Indonesia Jayapura, commonly known as Persipura Jayapura, or Persipura, is an Indonesian football club based in Jayapura, Papua. The team nickname is Mutiara Hitam (Black Pearl).[1] Persipura competes in the Indonesia Super League.

History

Foundation and early years (1963–1994)

Their early years were not filled with a lot of achievements. They managed only to win the Perserikatan First Division two times in 1979 and 1993, other than that they were runner-up in the 1980 Perserikatan season.[2]

Modern era and recent history (1994–present)

Their first achievement in the modern era is by winning the 2005 Liga Indonesia Premier Division.[2] PT. Persipura Papua was established to fulfill the requirement to compete in the Indonesia Super League.[3] Since the introduction of the indonesia Super League under coach Jacksen F. Tiago, they have enjoyed a successful run by winning three titles and finished three times as runner-up. They have produced many players that have been used by the Indonesia national football team such as, Hamka Hamzah, Titus Bonai, Boaz Solossa, Eduard Ivakdalam and Christian Warobay.[2]

Due to the suspension of FIFA To PSSI, Persipura have decided to disband their team on June 6, 2015.[4]

Their supporters are called Persipura Mania.[1]
