Peter McGill (born 19 August 1996) is a Scottish professional footballer who currently plays for Troon, on loan from Stranraer[1] in the Scottish League One. He has previously played for Ayr United.[2]

Playing career

Peter joined Duntocher Boys Club when he was 4-years-old and has made football his passion ever since. From an early age it was obvious that he had a great talent and there was no shortage of interest from senior clubs throughout Scotland. After trials at several clubs, Hamilton Accies won the signature of young McGill and it seemed that this would be the first step on his footballing career ladder. It therefore came as a bit of a shock when, after a year, the Accies coaches came to the conclusion that Peter was “too wee”. He returned for a spell at his boys club before joining Drumchapel United then Clydebank Boys Club before spending over a season at Falkirk, before he was released at the end of season 2012/13.

Ayr United

Peter’s Dad learned of an open trial with Ayr United, ahead of the 2013/14 season, and the resilient McGill showed up well and secured a contract at the Ayr United Football Academy. He resisted a counter offer from Clyde so that he could join the 19s squad at Somerset Park despite being only 16. Peter started off as a central midfield player in youth matches but for the senior team he has been played in a wide position.

Peter made his competitive debut in senior football for Ayr against Clyde in the Petrofac Cup defeat back in July 2014 and went on make a total of 10 appearances for the Honest Men with his promotion richly deserved with his pre-season showing, although he was released at the end of the season after a loan spell at Cumnock.

Stranraer

Peter signed for Stranraer in July 2015 and impressed in pre-season and while the attacking left sided player will mainly feature for the Under 20’s, he made his 1st team debut against Ayr United in August 2015.[3]

Despite making a strong early impression, a minor injury forced Peter on to the sidelines and after the signing of Willie Gibson became frustrated with a lack of first team opportunities. In February 2016, McGill signed for Troon on a loan deal until the end of the season, when his contract with Stranraer is due to expire.
