Petplan UK is a London-based pet insurance company.[1] Petplan Limited is a subsidiary of Allianz Insurance plc, part of the Allianz Global Group.[2] Petplan is the largest pet insurance provider in the UK.[3]

History

Petplan was launched in 1976 by Patsy Bloom and David Simpson.[4] As a pet owner Patsy Bloom spotted a gap in the market for specialist insurance cover for animals after receiving a large vet bill for her dog.[5] Since its launch, Petplan has become the market leader in the UK; with international partners using the Petplan brand name in Australia, Brazil, Canada, the Netherlands, Germany, New Zealand and the USA. When Petplan launched in 1976 the products covered domestic cats and dogs, with cover extending to rabbits in 1997. In 1988 Petplan launched insurance cover for horses, ponies and donkeys under the brand Petplan Equine.[6]

Services

Petplan insurance covers unexpected illnesses, accident and injuries for dogs and cats. Policies provide coverage for hereditary, congenital and chronic conditions – including cancer, diagnostic testing, prescription medications, non-routine dental treatment, MRI, CAT scan and ultrasound imaging as standard.[7] Petplan UK offers three main products for insuring pets – the 12 Months Essential plan, Covered for Life ® Classic Life plan and Covered For Life ®Ultimate Life plan.[8] They were the first to offer a life time cover, which means once a pet is insured, Petplan UK will cover all chronic conditions into old age, if the policy is renewed each year and the premium is paid.[9]

Like other pet insurance companies, Petplan does not offer coverage for pre-existing conditions, defined as those medical conditions that first occurred or showed clinical sign(s) or symptoms before the effective date of the policy or that occurred or showed clinical sign(s) or symptoms in the first 14 days of the policy.[10]

Charitable work

Petplan works with more than 1,200 charities throughout the UK and in 1994 formed the Petplan Charitable Trust which raises funds to promote the health and welfare of animals. In 2013 Petplan gave £2.5m to charities through an ongoing partnership to promote pet insurance as part of responsible pet ownership.[11]

Awards

In recent years, Petplan has been credited the following awards:

Customer Care Initiative of the Year - Insurance Times Claims Excellence Awards (2014).[12]

Consumer Moneyfacts Awards – Highly Commended (2014).[13]

Your Dog Best Pet Insurance 2013 – Winner (2013).[14]

Your Cat Best Pet Insurance 2013 – Winner (2013).[15]
