Philip Stanhope (Royalist officer)

Philip Stanhope was Colonel of the Shelford Manor Royalist forces in the English Civil War. He was the 10th son of Philip Stanhope, 1st Earl of Chesterfield (1584-1656) and his wife Catherine, daughter of Francis Hastings, Baron Hastings.[1]

Colonel Stanhope was in charge of the defences of Shelford Manor. He was defeated by the forces of Oliver Cromwell under the command of Colonel John Hutchinson. Colonel Stanhope died on 27 October 1645 as a result of his wounds in the battle.

In the list of sons he comes in after the ninth, even though in the text a few lines further on, he is described as fifth son. In the list itself, William is described as Fifth.
