Piano rock

Piano rock is a style of rock music which features the piano, typically replacing guitar as the lead instrument, as opposed to the majority of rock subgenres.

Characteristics

In the early stages of rock and roll, performers such as Little Richard showcased a "frantically charged piano-pounding style" on numbers such as "Tutti Frutti" and "Long Tall Sally". [1] Musicians such as Dr John also employed the piano.[2] Singer-songwriter Billy Joel's single "Piano Man", reached number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1974.[3] In 2004 Keane released the "piano-rock anthem" ‘Somewhere Only We Know’.[4] Pop punk band October Fall's music has been described as "piano-laced".[5]
