Piedmont Grocery is a grocery store located on Piedmont Avenue in Oakland, California, United States.

History

Piedmont Grocery opened in 1902 by Herman and Eugenia Sack.[1][2] It was originally located at 41st & Piedmont Avenue. It relocated a few blocks over after an earthquake and fire destroyed the original location. The original store had sawdust floors. Deliveries were made by horse-drawn wagons. Charles Larson was hired in 1927 when he was sixteen years old. He worked there for thirty years before purchasing the store. Larson's son, David Larson, acquired the business in 1968. He runs the store with his daughter, Amy Pence, today.[2] When Whole Foods opened in Oakland, store sales fell 12 percent. They have since recouped the loss.[3] Some employees at the store have worked there for 30–40 years.[2] Joe Esposito was a butcher who worked at the market for 23 years. He died in 2004.[4] In 2010, it was named the "Best Grocery Store That's Not Berkeley Bowl" by East Bay Express.[1]

Products

The store is known for its gourmet products. During the holidays they sell mincemeat pies made with Glenfiddich.[5] The store produces its own garlic butter, and all of the meat and seafood is fresh and served to customers by butchers.[1] They have a deli with takeout food and a salad bar.[1][2]
