Pig Island (Ottawa)

Pig Island is an island in the Rideau Canal in Ottawa, Ontario. It was named for a group of pigs stranded on the island during the construction of the Canal. Its location near Lansdowne Park has led to proposals to link it by pedestrian bridge to the mainland on either side of the Canal as part of the rehabilitation of Lansdowne Park.[1] It is located just North of the Bank Street Bridge.

It is an important landmark on the Rideau Canal Skateway, indicating roughly the midway point between either end of the skateable portion of the Canal. The Rideau Canal Skateway authority uses Pig Island as a landmark between Bank Street Bridge and the Locks to indicate parts of the Canal that are open to skating.
