Piktochart is a web-based infographic application which allows users without intensive experience as graphic designers to easily create professional-grade infographics using themed templates.[1] An important feature of Piktochart is its HTML Publishing capability, which generates infographics that are viewable online with multiple clickable elements for users. Additionally, the program provides tools to add interactive maps, charts, videos and hyperlinks.
History
In March 2012, a startup based in Penang, Malaysia, launched the first iteration of Piktochart.[2] Piktochart is described by Forbes Magazine as an infographic tool for "the graphically challenged," or for those who are simply in a time-crunch.[3]
In December 2012, Piktochart received a $140,000 grant from the Malaysian government’s Cradle Fund, as well as announcing that it had raised seed funding from a number of investors.[2]
Features
Whereas companies like LucidChart, Trendalyzer, Gliffy and others had previously focused on data-representation tools that would be useful for intra-corporate collaboration, as aids to speeches and presentations, and for the creation of internal communications documents, the Piktochart tool was focused on empowering users to create infographics that would be web-publisher ready, able to stand alone as a piece of rich, multimedia content. Piktochart provides over 400 templates which users can edit simply, or by using more advanced functions, customize as desired.[4][5]
The current version of Piktochart—"Magic Piktochart"—released in January 2013 includes an HTML publisher which allows users to create infographics that can be viewed online or embedded to a website, as well as allowing the user to include multiple interactive elements.[6]
The free version of the Piktochart application has over 600,000 registered users.[7]
