Pilani is a small town situated in the Shekhawati region of Rajasthan, India. Administratively, it forms a part of Jhunjhunu district. The place became popular since the establishment BITS Pilani.

Demographics

As of the 2011 Census of India, Pilani has a population of 26,219 of which 52% were male and 48% female. The average literacy rate is 79%, which is higher than the national average of 74.04%. Male literacy is 82.14% and female 65.46%. 14% of the population is under 6 years of age.[1]

Climate

Pilani is known for its extreme climate. Summer temperatures reach up to 50 degree Celsius between May and July, while winter temperatures plummet to sub-zero levels between December and January. The months of October and March are generally considered most pleasant. Pilani mostly suffers from low rain fall causing continuous drought for successive years but in recent years the rainfall is increasing subsequently.

Education and Research

Pilani is home to the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS Pilani), one of India's best engineering institutes, which was deemed to be a university in 1964.[2] The Institute is India's top ranked private college and is known for its quality education, amazing campus life and great placements. BITS Pilani has totally changed the face of Pilani town over the years.

Apart from BITS, The GD Birla Memorial Polytechnic Institute is the top ranked diploma college in Rajasthan, established in 1988, is also located in the town. Other colleges include the BK Birla Institute of Engineering & Technology (BKBIET), an engineering college formed in 2007, the Indermani Mandelia college for girls and the ShaadiLal Kataria Teacher Training college. In 2009, Shridhar University was established under the State Government Act as a private university. The University provides various higher education programs up to doctoral level. Pilani also has one of the major CSIR labs for advanced research in electronics, the Central Electronics Engineering Research Institute, which is located next to the BITS campus. Pilani is famous for its best quality education both in schools and colleges due to the amazing work of Birla group of institution.

Transportation

Pilani is not accessible directly by rail; the nearest stations are Chirawa, 16 kilometres (9.9 mi), Sadulpur 40 kilometres (25 mi)away served by the Northern Western Railway on the Sikar-Loharu Broad Gauge section and Loharu, 25 kilometres (16 mi) away in Haryana, which is served by fully broad gauge sections. Pilani is 208 kilometres (129 mi) from Jaipur and 193 kilometres (120 mi) from Delhi and has a good bus transport system.
