City College Plymouth is a tertiary institution and further education college in South West England offering a range of technical, professional and vocational qualifications, Apprenticeships, Access to Higher Education and Foundation Degree courses, plus professional and bespoke training to their network of employers.

It is the College's mission to be the leading provider of innovative, technical, professional education in the South West, with a particular emphasis on STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and maths), and the College is making significant investment in their facilities to achieve this.

The College is a partner college of the University of Plymouth, who support their Foundation Degree provision. The College is also a member of the prominent 157 group, a forward-thinking membership organisation which represents the UK’s leading colleges.

The college was formerly known as the Plymouth College of Further Education and was officially renamed on 1 January 2007.[1]

Their most recent Ofsted inspection described them as a ‘good’ college with ‘outstanding’ features (Ofsted Inspection Report 2012).

The higher education National Student Survey 2015 placed the College 10th in the country for student satisfaction, with 97% of higher education students more than satisfied with City College (Higher Education Funding Council for England directly funded students).

97% of employers would recommend the College to another employer and felt that the training they have received met their business objectives (Employer Satisfaction Survey 2015).

Awards

First ever recipient of the AoC Beacon Award for the Promotion and Delivery of Successful Apprenticeships. The national award, sponsored by Pearson and given to the College in 2015, recognises excellent teaching and innovative thinking in the further education sector when it comes to creating positive opportunities for both students and staff.

In 2015, the College won three silver awards - two Further Education Lecturer of the Year awards and one Outstanding Further Education Team of the Year award - at the annual Pearson Teaching Awards. The Pearson Teaching Awards were established by Lord David Puttnam in 1999 to celebrate and recognise outstanding educational professionals. City College lecturers also won Pearson Teaching Awards in 2013 and 2014.

In 2016, the College won a gold award in the Best Fairtrade University or College category for the third year in a row and was recognised as the overall winner in their category at the South West Fairtrade Business Awards. The College was also recognised for its environmental practice at the DEBI (Devon Environmental Business Initiative) Awards in 2015.

Each year, City College students participate in regional and national competitions - including SkillBuild, WorldSkills, Dulux Decorator of the Year and the Major Chef Series - regularly achieving gold, silver and bronze awards.

Campuses and Facilities

The College is currently based on two main sites, Kings Road in Devonport and the Goschen Centre, with an additional base at Piquet Barracks. The College has industry standard facilities, including training kitchens, performance and production studios, engineering and construction workshops.

The College is currently developing a new £13m Regional Centre of Excellence for STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) which is due to open in autumn 2017. This major new state-of-the-art Centre, which aims to train students in key priority sectors for the City, will replicate ‘real work’ environments across a range of industry sectors. The Centre is supported by the Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) Growth Deal, DBIS Regional Growth Fund and Plymouth City Council.

Opened in 2015, the College’s Marine Training Centre offers specialist marine training for apprentices and students aged 16 - 18 undertaking full-time courses in marine engineering and other nautical related programmes at the College and is supported by Princess Yachts International plc.

In 2013, the College completed a refurbishment of its Engineering Centre, providing new equipment and workshops - including for automotive, plumbing, fabrication and welding - which reflect the sector in the 21st Century.

The College also hosts a STEM Centre which is a specially designed state-of-the-art teaching facility and exhibition space, focused exclusively on delivering educational and instructional activities in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Located at the College’s Kings Road campus, the facility is led by a dedicated team of STEM experts. The stylish and relaxed environment is designed to capture and excite the imagination of young people and promote interest in the vast range of career paths and options available to scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians.
