Polygamy in Syria
Syria is a mostly-Muslim nation, polygamy is lawful. Polygamy is permissible in Islam up to four wives, as long as the husband devotes equal attention to each of them. Legislation, though, is restrictive. A first wife must accept that her husband takes a second wife, and the man must get a permission from a court before such marriage takes place.[1] Still, polygamy is practiced without regard to the law, often in communities where tradition is strong and knowledge about civil law limited.
