Polyporus is a genus of fungi in the family Polyporaceae. It is a genus used for the production of single cell proteins, sources of mixed protein extracted from pure or mixed cultures of algae, yeasts, fungi or bacteria (grown on agricultural wastes) used as a substitute for protein-rich foods, in human and animal feeds.
The name probably comes from poly meaning many and poros meaning passage.
Vegetative structure
The vegetative body is mycelial and composed of slender, branched and septate hyphae. Initially, the mycelia are monokaryotic, those developed from germination of spore. The hypahe are much branched and soon become dikaryotic hypahe by somatogamy, i.e. by clamp connection of monokaryotic hypahe.
Reproduction
Polyporus reproduces by both asexual and sexual means. Asexual reproduction is very rare but it is possible, Conidia is reported in them. Sexual reproduction is somatogamous type.
Structure of Basidiocarp
The fruit body in some species is stalked and in case of some species they are sessile and they develop directly as a erect portion directly from the substratum. The ventral surface of the fruit body is studded with manny fine pores. V.S. of the nasidio carp composed of five layers. Pileus surface which is thin zone of thick walled hyphae. Context it is composed of loosely arranged mycelial organisation. Tube layer consists of vertical column of tubes lined by besidia producing basidiospore. Pore surface This is the opening space of the tube layer. Hymenium is lined in layer of the pore layer consists of paraphyses and rarely with cystedia.
Hyphae
Three main kind of hyphae is present in them, Generative hyphae which is thin-walled with dense cytoplasm, Binding hyphae which is much branched and thick-walled, and Skeletal hyphae which are branched and thick walled and creates a lining layer around the pore tube. Based on the types of hyphae the basidiocarp are of three types, Monomitic this type consists of only generative hyphae, Dimitic this type is composed of either binding or skeletal hyphae, Trimitic composed of all three types of hyphae.
