Founded in 2002 the Ponemon Institute is a public policy think tank dedicated to privacy, data protection and information security policy. Using studies of privacy and data security, and conducting research that attempts to quantify the cost impact of data breaches, the institute attempts to provide guidance on how organizations seeking to understand the business impact of lost or stolen data[1][2] can improve their customers, employees and business partners perceptions of trust.

The institute, which produces an annual study of consumer's levels of trust in the privacy sphere, these being widely quoted in the mass media[3][4][5][6][7][8][9] seeks to position itself as an authority on trends in corporate and government practice, consumer perceptions and potential threats to the collection, management, and safeguarding of sensitive and confidential information including cyber crime and insider information, assessing these threats using the Ponemon Benchmark.[10][11][12][13][14][15][16]

The Ponemon Institute is the parent organization of the Responsible Information Management Council (RIM Council). Members of the Council, who include seasoned privacy practitioners and those new to the profession from both private and the public sectors, including multinational corporations, network, share best practice and attempt to develop ethical principles for the collection and use of personal, sensitive, or confidential information.[17][18][19]
