Ponikva is a settlement in the Municipality of Šentjur in eastern Slovenia. The area is part of the historical Styria region. The municipality is now included in the Savinja Statistical Region. The Slovene bishop, author, and poet Anton Martin Slomšek was born in the hamlet of Slom south of the settlement.[2]

The local parish church, built on the southeastern edge of the settlement, is dedicated to Saint Martin and belongs to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Celje. It was built between 1732 and 1737.[3]
