Poovathur is a village in the Orathanadu taluk of Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu, India.

Demographics

As per the 2001 census, Poovathur West had a total population of 2086, with 987 males and 1099 females. The sex ratio was 1113. The literacy rate was 75.89. since from beginning school has achieved 100% result in state board examination and produced excellent students and the school is so popular within the surrounding 12 villages.

Poovathur also contributed to nation for freedom struggle through Mr. Rengasamy (INA).he was one of the prime members of INA. He is one of the strongest generals under Mr. Netahji and fought against the British army during the Second World War. He loved nation more than any thing else and hence he named his children and grandchildren with freedom fighters' names like Subash Chandra Bose, Rajaji and Indira.The following temples in poovathur uthirapathiyar kovil(north street),kaliyamman kovil(sethurayar street)&sokiyamman kovil(karruppan street).
