Popboomerang is an independent record label[1] based in Melbourne Australia. The label was established by Scott Thurling in 2000[2] but didn't release its first recordings until 2002.[3] Thurling originally started Popboomerang as an internet "swap shop" around 1997, trading Australian recordings to overseas fans in return for recordings unavailable in Australia.

"I would make CD samplers of the Aussie bands for the overseas fans and enjoyed this so much the idea started to form of legitimising things to form a proper label."
Scott Thurling[3]

The label has released over 80 recordings, from the first release by Sarah Sarah, Sing Til It Hurts, in late 2002. Notable releases include Frente's 2005 EP, Try to Think Less, the band's first release in eight years,[4] Skipping Girl Vinegar's critically acclaimed 2008 debut album, Sift the Noise, as well as albums from Tamas Wells and The Killjoys's fifth album, Pearl.

In response to the decline in the sales of physical recordings across the music industry the label has placed its entire back catalogue online.[5] Popboomerang has also turned to crowd funding to finance its tenth anniversary compilation album, Aches & Shakes: 2002-2012 – A Decade Of Popboomerang Records, which Thurling believes is the future of the independent music industry.[6]

"Initially it was word of mouth which steered me in the crowd funding direction. I supported a few projects on Pozible so I gained some confidence from a fan perspective that the model was above board and sound."
Scott Thurling[6]
