Career

In 2005, Sarkar made his directorial debut with the film Parineeta which earned him the national film award for best Director. Parineeta was also Vidya Balan's debut. It was a critical and commercial success at the box office.

Sarkar directed his next three films under the Yash Raj Films banner. Laaga Chunari Mein Daag with Rani Mukerji in the leading role of a prostitute. The film was released on 12 October 2007 and was not very successful at the box office.[2]Later, Sarkar also made Lafangey Parindey. It starred Neil Nitin Mukesh and Deepika Padukone and was released in summer 2010. After making Laaga Chunari Mein Daag and Lafangey Parindey, which didn't perform at the box office as expected, he felt sad and upset. After making two flops Aditya Chopra gave him another chance. He directed Mardaani in 2014 which released 22 August. Again with Rani Mukerji in the leading role that proved to be a hit.[3] Sarkar wants to make a film based on some of his real life experiences. He says it is half-written as of now. [4]
