Preble High School is a public high school in the Green Bay, Wisconsin School District. The school draws students from Green Bay, Bellevue, De Pere, and New Franken. The name comes from the former town of Preble, which is now part of northeastern Green Bay and New Franken, Wisconsin.

History

On August 8, 2014, a fire occurred in a gymnasium at Preble High School, delaying the start of classes. The fire was a result of the spontaneous combustion of rags soaked with gym floor resurfacing product.[2] It was the second largest fire in Green Bay history.[3] The estimated damage was about 7.5 million dollars. A new field house with an indoor track opened in November 2014.[3]

Academics

Curricular activities focus on the arts and technology, with programs in computer-assisted design, and mathematical analysis. Preble's fine arts department is popular, with strong band, orchestra, and choir programs. The school's annual musical is in November, and the annual play is in May. The school choirs stage a cabaret show every spring, which includes a dinner show, where the dinner is prepared by the school's culinary arts program. There are also prominent jazz band and vocal jazz/madrigal groups.

In 2004-05, Preble celebrated its 50th year. The entire school year was documented on video in a project called "Preble All Access: 2004-05 Video Diary".

Extra-curricular activities

Music and drama

Preble's music and drama department has produced the musicals Guys and Dolls, West Side Story, and many others. Most recently however, the school's musical theatre program put on productions such as Beauty and the Beast (under the direction of Sue McAllister), Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and All Shook Up. The 2009-2010 musical was Les Misérables. The 2010-2011 musical was White Christmas. The 2011-2012 musical was How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. The musical for the 2012-2013 school year was Godspell and the musical for the 2013-2014 school year was Legally Blonde. The 2014-2015 musical was Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, and the 2015-2016 musical was Hello, Dolly!.

In October 2010, Preble's show choir, Center Stage, was voted by Parade Magazine as one of the top three show choirs in the country.[4]

Athletics

Preble's boys' soccer, boys' and girls' cross country, boys' and girls' track and field, and boys' and girls' golf have all advanced to the WIAA state tournaments or meets. The girls' golf team made it to the state tournament three consecutive years (2005, 2006, and 2007).

Preble's boys' soccer team advanced to the state championship game in the fall of 2013. This is a first in school and district history.

Sting Cancer

In 2004, a faculty member who is a cancer survivor and students at Preble founded Sting Cancer, a club for raising awareness of cancer and offering support to those affected by it. Over a decade later, the club has has spread to nearly 30 other schools in northeast Wisconsin.[5]

School referendum

Preble High School, which was designed for roughly 1700 students, currently holds more than 2100, making it the second largest high school in Wisconsin as of 2016.[6] A referendum to create a new school in northeastern Brown County, Wisconsin to alleviate overcrowding was defeated by a 2-to-1 margin on November 6, 2006.[7]
