Description
Overview
Prism Video Converter Software [1] is a proprietary video conversion software published by NCH Software available for Windows and Macintosh Operating Systems, and has been referenced by the New York Times as a “commercial software with faster conversion speeds and more features” in comparison to many existing conversion programs.[2] The standard edition is distributed as freeware, with no restrictions, and users may purchase a registration key to unlock the additional features in the deluxe edition.[3] It is written in C++.
It offers users the ability to convert avi, asf, dvd, flv, mov, mp4, mpg, wmv, and any other video formats that use the Microsoft DirectShow codec to another video format. Options include the ability to set the compression/encoder rates, resolution and frame rates of output files. As of January 2016, Prism was listed as having 1.7 million downloads on CNet.[4]
Controversy
Previously, Prism and other NCH products came bundled with optional browser plugins like the Ask and Chrome toolbars, which sparked complaints from users and triggered malware warnings from antivirus software companies like Norton and McAfee. NCH has since unbundled all toolbars in all program versions released after July 2015.[5]
Features
Prism supports HD and high compression for smaller files. Users can configure encoder options for their video, such as resize, crop, change frame-rate, color change, text caption and rotation.[6] Prism also comes with the ability to convert from any non-copyrighted DVD disc[7] to any of the supported video formats. It supports a command line mode[8] for automated file conversions, and a batch conversion mode to convert multiple files at once.[9]
Government Use
The Department of Veterans Affairs has endorsed Prism for use and considers it a "mature and stable technology" but it does not have formal section 508 clearance.[10]
Input Video Formats
Prism is able to convert from the following video formats 3gp, asf, avi, divx, dv, flv, h263, h264, huffyuv, indeo 3, m4v, mkv, mod, mov, mp4, mpe, mpeg, mpg, ogm, ogv, smacker, vc1, vob, webm, wmv, and xvid.[11] If Prism is unable to decode a format, it will ask permission to download the libavcodec library file to expand the number of formats it can read.[12]
Output Video Formats
Prism supports converting to 3gp, avi, asf, flv, mov, mp4, mpg, rm, swf, and wmv video file formats.[13]
