Private Education in Canada

The private education network in Canada can develop and is managed according to the requirements of the provincial laws applying to private education.[1][2]

There are numerous private schools in Canada,[3][4] some of them being technical colleges, and others active in the field of general education. There also are private universities in Canada.[5][6] In some provinces, for many reasons, one of which being the size of the public education network,[7][8] the private education might be more developed than in others. An important distinction within technical colleges in Canada lies in the accreditation of some of these schools for the Canada Student Loans Program,[9] which applies in several provinces (except for Quebec, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut).[10] The accreditation of a technical college affects the amount that can be granted to a student through the Program. We can find, in some Canadian provinces, an important number of private schools whose teaching is based on a particular philosophy of education, such as Montessori, Waldorf, or some schools related to a particular religious community.[11][12] Private schools can be independently owned and managed,[13][14] while others can be regrouped under school groups,[15][16] which are commonly called «Education Groups», which can operate schools in more than one province,[17][18][19] thus having the obligation to abide to particular provincial education laws. The influence of some American ideas of education is sensible within the private education network in Canada, as the recent opening of a liberal arts university shows (Quest University[5]), and to the creation of education groups alike some education groups in the United States,[20][21] along with the presence of American education groups in Canada - for instance, the one owning the Everest Colleges in Ontario.[20] Some education groups limit their activities to a single scope - like technical training,[22] for instance, or within a single province[23] - while others lead more diversified activities, such as general education, technical training and even university education.[17][24] School transactions between education groups might happen.[25] More than one education group is active on the international level.[26][27] The National Association of Career Colleges[28] regroups only a small part of private career colleges in Canada.
