'Eye for Eyes mission' (Eye Stem Storage and Transportation feat)
Natarajan et al. with Nichi-In Centre for Regenerative Medicine (NCRM), an Indo-Japan academic institute based in Chennai, developed a method[17] of transportation of corneal endothelial tissue without any refrigeration. The time from harvesting the corneal endothelial tissue (from cadaver donor-eye) till reaching a central stem cell lab was up to 72 hours, and yet due to the unique nanopolymer cocktail used for the transportation, the cells survived.[18] The harvesting of endothelium cells of the cornea led to using a single eye to restore sight to more than one person's eye, leading to the process being called 'Eye for Eyes mission'.[19]
Effect of Eye for Eyes:
- A single cornea can be used to restore eyesight to multiple persons
- The endothelial cells of cornea can be transported to even distant rural hospitals
- No specialized cool transport is needed. The cost of corneal transport decreases and non-availability of special vehicles is no longer an issue.
