Professor Layton and the Mansion of the Deathly Mirror[1] (レイトン教授と死鏡の館 Reiton-kyōju to Shi-kyō no kan, lit. "Professor Layton and the Mansion of the Death Mirror") is a puzzle adventure video game developed and published by Level-5 for cellphones in Japan. Although not part of the main series of Professor Layton games, the story takes place during Professor Layton's First Season.

Gameplay

Professor Layton and the Mansion of the Deathly Mirror is a puzzle adventure game. The player controls the main characters, Professor Layton and his young assistant Luke as they investigate a house that contains a cursed mirror. As the Professor and his assistant investigate and search for clues, the residents of the mansion respond with a puzzle involving the case in some way.

Puzzles include brain teasers, and logic puzzles among others. The player is presented with each puzzle and its value in "picarats", and is given unlimited time to solve it. Each puzzle has three hints available for it, but the player must spend one "hint coin" to see each hint. Hint coins are limited; the player starts with ten, and more can be found by searching around the mansion. Once the player feels he has the answer, depending on the puzzle he enters it by selecting an answer, or entering the answer through they keypad. If the player is correct, the picarats are added to his total score. If the player is incorrect, he can retry the puzzle indefinitely, though the first two times he is wrong, the value of the puzzle will decrease by approximately ten percent each time (or more, in the case of multiple-choice puzzles). Optionally, a player can quit a puzzle at no cost and try another, though certain puzzles are mandatory to progress.

Plot

Professor Layton receives a letter informing him of a mansion deep in the woods that holds a mysterious mirror. It is said that under certain condition, those who look into the mirror will die. The skeptical Professor and his assistant, Luke, head to the mansion to investigate this strange mirror, and the curse it brings.
