Purdue University Calumet is an academically comprehensive and accredited regional institution within the Purdue University system. Its campus is located in the northwest Indiana city of Hammond within the Chicago metropolitan area, 25 miles southeast of downtown Chicago.
Academics
Colleges
Purdue University Calumet students can earn a Purdue University degree in any of 50 baccalaureate and master’s degree programs of study. Purdue Calumet also provides learning opportunities leading to dozens of professional certificates.
Additionally, Purdue University Calumet has formally adopted experiential learning — the structured integration of traditional classroom and textbook learning with the applied learning that occurs within a real world environment — as a requirement of all undergraduate students.

Accreditation
Purdue University Calumet as a whole has been accredited by The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools continuously since 1969.[2]
ABET has continuously accredited Purdue University Calumet's following bachelor's degrees since the date listed: Computer Engineering 2004, Construction Technology 1972, Electrical Engineering 1980, Electrical Engineering Technology 1976, Industrial Engineering Technology 1972, Manufacturing Engineering Technology 1994, Mechanical Engineering 1980 and Mechanical Engineering Technology 1972. ABET has continuously accredited Purdue University Calumet's following associates degrees since the date listed: Architectural Technology 1982, Civil Engineering Technology 1972, Electrical Engineering Technology 1972, Industrial Engineering Technology 1972, Manufacturing Engineering Technology 1994, and Mechanical Engineering Technology 1972. p The College of Education is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and offers programs approved by the state of Indiana.[3]
The College of Business is accredited by International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (IACBE) and North Central Association (NCA).
The College of Nursing is accredited by the National League for Nursing.
History
Purdue University Calumet first opened for classes at its current site in 1951, after having introduced Purdue University credit classes in Hammond following World War II in 1946. Purdue University Calumet awarded its first baccalaureate degree in the spring of 1967.
In February, 2014, Purdue University Calumet and Purdue University North Central of Westville, Ind. jointly announced plans to unify their respective campuses into a single university to be called Purdue University Northwest. Unification was officially approved by the Higher Learning Commission on March 4, 2016.[4]
Athletics
Purdue University Calumet athletic teams are known as the Peregrines. The university is affiliated with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) as a member of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC). Men's sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer and tennis; while women's sports include basketball, cross country, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball.
In 2011, students started a campaign to change the school's mascot. Ryan Wozniak, Ismael Cornejo and Matt Virus created a website where students could vote for the mascot they thought best represented Northwest Indiana. The Steelers remained the overwhelming favorite over candidates such as the Rangers, the Warriors, and the Oilers.
