Qala-e-Haji sahib

Qala-e-Haji sahib is a village in Surkh-Rōd District, Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan. It is located in the capital of Surkh-Rod district which is Sultanpur. It is bordered by Surkh-Rod river to the north. This village is named after 4 Great Grand Fathers who did hajj and there names are Haji Shereen, Haji Shahbaz,Haji Muhammad Baz and Haji Miralam. Most of the people from this village are from the tribe of Stanikzai and the sub tribe of khutubkhail. Most of the people from this village have taken refuge in neighbouring countries like Pakistan because of the soviet afghan war.

Water

Irrigation in the village is from the Surkh Rod river and is delivered on-farm through a canal. The Kuchi women use the water from the wash for their laundry. Ritual ablutions are performed by the men in the canal. Also people have their own water wells and hand pump in their homes.

Maintenance

Cleaning is carried out by the land owners’ sharecroppers on a daily basis. Cleaning is usually done from the head of the canal to the tail. The labourers work as a gang and divide the cleaning allocation between them. Work is allocated proportionally to the amount of land and water rights of each landlord or sharecropper at the rate of one person per day for those with less than 20 jerib (4 ha) of land, and two people per day for those with over 20 jerib. Only one or two individuals own more than 50 jerib.

Education

The schools educate more than 500 people in the village in Surkh-Rod District, Afghanistan. There are also mosques for Islamic education.

Agriculture

There are cows, sheep, goats, chickens and use the milk and eggs for selling. The plants that are grown there are wheat, sugarcane, tomatoes, lady fingers, egg plant, onion, lime, green chili and loquat.
