The Great Public Schools Association of Queensland Inc. (GPS) is an association of nine south-east Queensland secondary schools established in 1918. With the exception of Brisbane State High School, GPS schools are all-boys schools. The GPS competition is open to male students only, with the exception of Debating. The corresponding south-east Queensland athletic competition for female secondary school students is the Queensland Girls' Secondary Schools Sports Association (QGSSSA). The GPS competition encompasses a variety of sporting and cultural activities.

As of 2013, seventy per cent of Queensland's Rhodes Scholars have attended a GPS school.[1]

Schools

Current member schools[2]

There has been criticism from the Private and Independent students of the GPS competition of Brisbane State High's membership to the GPS Competition due to it being the only Public School in the GPS competition. Its membership is maintained despite dispute. The term "Public Schools" in the GPS acronym encompasses all public education including the Grammar Schools who are indeed themselves Public Schools. (Grammar Schools Act, 1860)

Affiliated Junior Schools

While no Junior School GPS Competition exists the following schools participate under a gratis basis. The affiliation of the Toowoomba Anglican College (previously the Toowoomba Preparatory School) is currently unknown however it is believed that it became associated as to provide rivalry to Grammar Junior (also located in Toowoomba) with the age of students and the required distance to travel to Brisbane Junior affiliates.

GPS Day of Excellence [Music]

The GPS Competition holds an Annual Music Showcase where member schools present a set repertoire that is decided by the school who is hosting for that particular year. Students then rehearse for a final concert which is held on the school's campus (except for Toowoomba Grammar School were there is no facility to adequately fit students. In 2012, the concert was held in the Empire Theatre)
