R. Gopal also known as Nakkeran Gopal (born: 10 April 1959[2]), is a journalist from Tamil Nadu, India and the editor and publisher of Tamil magazine (biweekly) Nakkeeran.[3] He has also the author of an several controversial books. He has been jailed for withholding information about sandal wood smuggler Veerappan during Jayalalitha's chief ministership. He is a supporter of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.[4][5][6][7][8][9]
Negotiator
R. Gopal shot into fame on interviewing forest brigand and criminal Veerappan in forest areas bordering Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.[3] Gopal is known for his series of interviews with Veerappan, when the later was still a fugitive operating from the Jungles. Gopal also acted as the intermediary and hostage negotiator for the Government of Tamil Nadu in several cases of kidnapping carried out by Veerappan,
Prosecutions
- R.Gopal was prosecuted by Law enforcing agencies of Tamil Nadu; prosecution argued that he aided forest brigand Veerappan when Veerappan kidnapped Prof. Krishnasamy, A.S.Mani - editor of "Netikan" and other two during 1998; he was acquitted by a fast track court on during April, 2009.[10]
- Special Investigation Cell, Tamil Nadu implicated R. Gopal and issued summons to him in connection with Dr.Rajkumar abduction by Veerappan, against which he took anticipatory bail at Madras High court.[3]
