Early life

Ophelia Santhaselvi was born in a Tamil Christian middle-class family in Tamil Nadu.[2] Her father was a Traffic Manager in Metropolitan Transport Corporation, while her mother works for Bharat Petroleum. She has a younger brother. Ophelia did her schooling in Holy Angel's Convent, T. Her father wanted to give her a "rare name" and named her Ophelia, after the character from William Shakespeare's Hamlet.[1]

In 2013, Ophelia turned a television anchor with the show Studio 6 on Zee Tamil.[9] She later also hosted the show Comedyil Kalakkuvathu Eppadi on Vijay TV.[10] She also features on "Cheap Popularity", a skit that appears on Hiphop Tamizha's debut album Hip Hop Tamizhan (2012).[11]

Awards

Ophelia was recognised as the "Best female RJ of the year 2008" by Ananda Vikatan, a leading Tamil weekly Magazine in Chennai.[12] Subsequently, she became "Chennai's most popular RJ".[4] She has won the RJ of the Year (Tamil) award at the Indian Excellence in Radio Awards (IRF) in 2009 [13][7] and 2010.[14][15] Her show Jill Jill Neram was also named the Best Programme Broadcast after 11 am (Tamil) in 2010.[16]
