Radirgy (ラジルギ Rajirugi), known as Radio Allergy outside Japan, is a vertically scrolling shoot 'em up video game developed by MileStone in 2005 for the Sega NAOMI arcade platform. The game was ported in 2006 to the Dreamcast, PlayStation 2, and GameCube exclusively in Japan. The latter two ports were titled Radirgy PreciouS and Radirgy GeneriC respectively. The GameCube version was planned to be localized in North America, but the release was canceled. However, the game was later localized in the Wii compilation Ultimate Shooting Collection. Critics found the game challenging and unique but average overall. A sequel, Radirgy Noa, was released in 2010.

Gameplay

Gameplay in the first stage

Radirgy is a vertically scrolling shooter. Players can choose from 3 different ships each with different weapons including a spread gun, homing laser, and bubble cannon. Additionally, three speeds are available. The player may destroy ships with either their main weapon, a small sword, or the ABSNET shield. When not shooting a shield can be used to absorb enemy bullets. When some enemies are destroyed, blue items appear which will increase the player's shiel gauge. Graphics are presented in a cartoon cel-shaded style. [1]

Plot

In an age filled with radio waves, buildings, vehicles, and people have begun to incorporate radio receivers in a monumental scale. A 16-year-old Shizuru Kamigusa, whose father worked for a corporation that was developing a remedy for her radio wave allergy, but a terrorist group UMBRA led by Ruki Mishima took over the building where the father lived. With the help of her partner Tadayo Aita, she rode the modified suit Kojiro to recover her father and the medicine.[2]

Release

Two special editions of Radirgy for Dreamcast were available in Japan from Sega Direct — one with a phone card, and another packaged with a refurbished Dreamcast console and phone card. The game was ported to the PlayStation 2 and GameCube in Japan under the titles Radirgy PreciouS and Radirgy GeneriC respectively. Each was identical to the Dreamcast version but included an extra gameplay mode exclusive to that version only - "Okawari Mode" in PreciouS and "Manpuku Mode" in GeneriC. The title "PreciouS" is a reference to the PlayStation (PS), as "GeneriC" is for GameCube (GC).

In January 2007, O~3 Entertainment announced that it would be releasing Radirgy in February in North America exclusively for the GameCube under the new title of Radio Allergy.[3] The game was set to retail for $20.[4] However, the release date was pushed back several times, and was eventually cancelled by June 7, 2007 due to a lack of interest from retailers in stocking GameCube titles. Mileston began looking into options to include the game in a compilation for the Wii.[5] Radio Allergy was finally localized for the Wii in the compilation Ultimate Shooting Collection. A sequel, Radirgy Noa, was released in 2010 for the Wii.

IGN found the Dreamcast version of Radirgy to be challenging, but overall an average shooter, giving it a 6.5.[1] In a hand-on preview, IGN enjoyed the GameCube version. They found the game to not carry the depth of Ikaruga, another GameCube shooter, but still believed the game was "solid" especially for the retail price of $20.[7] Nintendo World Report found the game to be a "decent shooter with a unique appearance" and rated it 6.5 overall.[8]
