Rafael Anchía is a Democratic member of the Texas House of Representatives, representing the Dallas-based 103rd District since 2004.[1] He had previously served on the board of the Dallas Independent School District.

Personal life and education

Anchia is the son of immigrants from Mexico and Spain.[2] Anchia lived in Miami as a child, where he attended and graduated from Miami Coral Park Senior High School in 1986. He is a graduate of Southern Methodist University and Tulane University Law School.[2] In college, Anchia majored in Spanish, Latin American studies, and anthropology.[2]

Anchia is married to Marissa. They have two daughters, Sofia and Maia.[3]

Career

Anchia was elected to the Texas House of Representatives on November 2, 2004, and sworn into office on January 11, 2005. He is now serving his sixth term in the Texas House[4] and is 35th in seniority out of the 150 members of the Texas House of Representatives.[5]

Anchia is chairman of the International Trade & Intergovernmental Affairs Committee, and sits on the Energy Resources Committee.[5] He has previously been vice-chair of Pensions, Investments and Financial Services Committee, and sat on the Economic Development, Elections, Financial Institutions, Land & Resource Management, Local & Consent Calendar, and Urban Affairs Committees.[6]

Anchia is on the board of directors for Education is Freedom,[7] the governing board of the SMU Clements Center for Southwest Studies,[8] and the Texas State Democratic Executive Committee.[9]

Anchia is a supporter of new urbanism and finding a balance between fossil fuels and renewable energy.[10]

Anchia is also an attorney with the law firm Haynes & Boone LLP.[2]

Anchia has received awards from the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Dallas, the League of United Latin American Citizens, Texas Lawyer, the North Texas Crime Commission, and other organizations and publications. Texas Monthly has named Anchia "Rookie of the Year" and "One of the Ten Best Legislators." Anchia is affiliated with the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials Educational Fund, the Leadership Dallas Alumni Association, the Dallas Assembly, the SMU Clements Center on Southwest Studies, and the Oak Cliff Lions Club.[2]
