Raising for Effective Giving (REG) is a Swiss charity organization. Its members consist mostly of professional poker players (and to a lesser extent, financial investors) who pledge who donate 2% of their income to selected charities on a quarterly basis.[1][2] A part of the effective altruism movement, REG channels its donations toward charities whose philanthropic impact is considered by the organization to be significantly more cost-effective[3] than other charities.[4][5][6]

Background

REG was founded by several poker professionals and members of the Effective Altruism Foundation (formerly GBS Switzerland),[7] a Swiss philanthropic think tank,[8] on July 3 during the 2014 World Series of Poker in Las Vegas.[9]

Transparency

REG currently publishes semi-annual reports on its financial activities and donations.[10][11]

Period Money moved in USD (not adjusted for inflation) Additional notes
Q3 & Q4 2015 382,755[12] Notable donation recipients included The Machine Intelligence Research Institute (MIRI), Against Malaria Foundation, Animal Ethics, REG and its parent foundation, the Effective Altruism Foundation (EAF), and the Great Ape Project.[12]
Q2 2015 158,088[13] $100,000 were raised through a matching challenge, with the remaining $58,088 coming from regular donations. These were again allocated according to donor preferences and decisions made by REG. Notable recipients included The Machine Intelligence Research Institute (MIRI), The Center for Applied Rationality (CFAR), GiveDirectly, Animal Ethics, New Incentives, Nonhuman Rights Project, REG and its parent organization, the Effective Altruism Foundation (EAF).[13]
Q1 2015 56,985[14] 49.2% of donations were restricted to specific charities; remaining 50.8% distributed evenly between selected charities and meta-charities.[14]
Q4 2014 369,053[15] 94.5% of donations were restricted by the donors to specific charities, with REG allocating each half of the remaining 5.5% to selected charities and meta-charities. Significant increase mainly attributed to Christmas/end-of-year peak in donations, and REG member Martin Jacobson placing 1st in the 2014 World Series of Poker.[15]
Q3 2014 37,873[16] 59.7% of donations were restricted by donors to specific charities, while the remaining 40.3% were split evenly by REG between selected charities and meta-charities.[16]

As of December 2015, REG had raised a total of over $1,000,000 for its supported causes.[17]

International coverage and reception

REG has received widespread coverage within the international poker community, including Bluff Europe,[7][18] PokerNews,[19][20][21] CalvinAyre,[9][22][23] PokerListings,[24][25] PokerTube,[26] the PokerStars blog,[27][28] Poker Update,[29] Poker.co.uk[30][31] and Pokerfuse,[32] among others. Several well known poker professionals, such as Daniel Negreanu,[30][33][34][35] have mentioned REG in blogs[27][28][36] and on social media.

Two REG members, Martin Jacobson[37][38][39] and Jorryt van Hoof,[40] were among the November Nine that played at the World Series of Poker Main Event final table.[41] Jacobson placed first, thus winning $10,000,000 and earning the title of poker world champion, while van Hoof placed third and won over $3,800,000.[42]

Criticism

Professional poker player Rupert Elder wrote on his blog arguing that it may be better to leave money for charity in one's will, instead of donating now, as REG recommends.[36] REG subsequently responded to Elder on their website.[43][44]
